Same day dentures have some definite benefits, most importantly of which is the ability always to have teeth. But there are some factors you should consider. First, same day, dentures are not forever. Your mouth naturally changes once your natural teeth are no longer in your mouth. As your arch changes, your dentures may not fit perfectly any longer. We can adjust the dentures moderately, but over time, your mouth may change enough that you will need an entirely new set of dentures. Some patients use the same day dentures as a temporary fix, choosing complete dentures down the road.
Same day dentures also do not give you time to get used to the new appliance. You come into the office with some of your natural teeth (assuming you did not lose them yet) and walk out with a complete set of artificial teeth. Because we place the teeth right away, you may have to come in several times for adjustments as we figure out how to make the teeth the most comfortable for you.
How it Works
Even though the name is ‘same day dentures,’ the procedure requires a few appointments. At your first couple of appointments, we size you up for the dentures. We take molds of your mouth and send them to the lab to have your dentures created. At this time, we also examine your mouth to determine if we can remove your posterior teeth now. This gives your gums time to heal and ensures more comfort when we place the dentures.
Once we have the dentures, we will make you an extraction appointment. At this appointment, our dentists remove any remaining teeth and place the same day dentures in your mouth. We will make sure you are comfortable when you wake up and make any adjustments necessary.
After you receive the dentures, we will schedule several follow up appointments. Our dentists use these appointments to address any issues you face with your dentures. Are you uncomfortable while eating or talking? Are there any special issues you face? Make sure you tell us everything at these appointments so that our staff can adjust your dentures accordingly.
