Dentures vs. Dental Implants Plano, TX

Oral Surgeon explaining tooth replacement options, dental implants and dentures and to woman from McDonald & Luck DDS in Plano, TxMissing teeth are common, but it doesn’t change the fact that they open doors to issues like difficulty chewing and speaking, facial sagging, and negative teeth alignment. A missing tooth can change the appearance of your smile and completely shatter your confidence. One hundred years ago, no one could have imagined getting a permanent solution to fix missing teeth. However, times have changed, and today, it’s not impossible to permanently restore your smile.

There are three most common tooth replacement options – dentures, bridges, and implants. Dental Implants and dentures usually serve the same purpose of restoring your smile. However, there are quite a few differences between the two.

Dentures vs. Dental Implants – What Are They?

Dentures are removable teeth created by dentists to replace missing teeth. There are two types of dentures available – full or partial. Full dentures replace all missing teeth, while partial dentures replace one or a few missing teeth.

Dental implants are metal posts or screws surgically placed to the jaw bone to support artificial teeth. These artificial tooth roots are placed below your gums and serve as a permanent solution to missing teeth.

Major Differences Between Dentures and Implants

Dental implants and dentures are two completely different procedures that serve the same purpose but feature major differences. Here’s everything you should know:

Durability

One of the benefits of dental implants is that they're more durable than dentures. Dentures last up to 10 years, while implants last a lifetime.

No Messy Adhesives

Ill-fitting dentures need adhesive to keep them in place. Since implants are placed into the jaw bone, you don’t require dental adhesives to hold them in place.

Maintenance

The after-surgery implant care is not that comprehensive in comparison to dentures. Taking care of implants is easier than dentures; you take care of them the way you take care of your natural teeth. That means brushing twice a day with a nylon, soft-bristle brush, flossing daily, and regularly seeing your dentist. However, dentures require proper care to keep them clean and ensure their longevity.

Complications

Dental implants are usually safe and have a success rate of 95%. However, they can cause complications such as gum recession and tissue damage. Ill-fitting dentures can cause irritation and inflammation to the gums. They might have a hard time staying in place and can cause painful sores too.

Jawbone Deterioration

What makes people choose dental implants is how implants prevent bone loss. Dentures can restore your smile but cannot prevent jawbone deterioration, but they can increase the rate at which the bone in the mouth atrophies. Denture care is quite an easy task.
