Dental Sealants Plano, TX

Young girl smiling with healthy teeth after getting dental sealants at McDonald & Luck DDS in Plano, TxWe offer a simple treatment that can significantly reduce the development of decay and caries. The application of dental sealants has been shown to lower the instance of decay by as much as 80%. At McDonald & Luck DDS, we value preventive dental care as part of your overall oral health. One preventative step is sealing areas that are more prone to catching and retaining debris such as food particles and plaque. Let our team evaluate your teeth to see if dental sealants are right for you.

The surface of our molars are wonderfully designed with peaks and valleys. This allows us to chew food and break it up for swallowing. Part of this design can sometimes come with areas that can easily trap or catch food and other debris making it difficult if not impossible to remove through the natural wash of saliva, drinking water, or even brushing. We look for these areas that are more prone for debris to become stuck and place the barrier of sealants between them. This will protect the enamel and prevent bacteria from making contact.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants can be applied to any patient that we see a need for. In general, we tend to recommend sealants to our patients who:

•  Are in Adolescence: Dental sealants are recommended for all patients who have developed their permanent molars but are still in adolescence. The age range of about 8-18 is still considered an oral hygiene learning phase. We understand that kids are still learning brushing habits and techniques and we want to help them navigate this period with help. Dental sealants can be used to protect vulnerable areas of the teeth while your child matures. We believe that protecting their teeth young will help them maintain their teeth later in life.

•  Have Areas Where Food Can Be Trapped: Some teeth can naturally have deeper pits or overhangs of enamel creating little caves where food and plaque can become stuck. We can protect the natural enamel while also preventing bacteria from settling in these tiny crevices.

•  Have Health Problems: There are a wide range of mental or physical health reasons that brushing adequately can be problematic. We can assist in reducing more difficult areas to brush with the placement of dental sealants.

Applying Dental Sealants

The application of dental sealants is an easy, painless treatment that we perform in the office often following a dental cleaning. The first step is locating the vulnerable areas of your teeth that would benefit from sealants. We then begin with ensuring that the area is clean and free of decay-causing bacteria. Once clean, we apply a delicate acidic wash to the directed area. This will lightly roughen the enamel surface just enough to allow for better adhesion of the sealant product. The sealant material is then brushed on with a small brush in a liquid form. The material is a lacquer or plastic material that should remain in place, though if swallowed as it wears off is not going to harm you. The sealant is then hardened in place. You can use your teeth as normal shortly following your treatment.
