Dental Implant Materials Plano, TX

Dental implants are tooth root replacements for missing teeth. They serve as a sturdy base for fixed or removable teeth designed to match your neighboring teeth.

There are different types of dental implants available to match your needs, the most common ones being:

•  Endosteal implants: These are made of titanium and are surgically inserted into the jawbone of the missing tooth socket.

•  Subperiosteal implants: They are placed on top of your jawbone but underneath your gum tissue.

•  Zygomatic implants: These are the least common kind of implants and are chosen only if you lack sufficient jawbone for an endosteal implant.

Dental Implant Materials

Dental implants are made of materials that naturally fuse with your jawbone in order to stimulate its natural growth. This process is called biocompatibility. Here are the two most common materials used to create dental implants:

Titanium

Dental implants have been produced from titanium for many years. Extensive research was conducted on them by analyzing their physical and chemical properties to ensure their compatibility with the human body. Commercially pure titanium contains trace elements, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron, contributing to its mechanical qualities.

It was found that when titanium implants are placed, the jawbone naturally grows around it. Titanium implants are long-lasting as well as reasonably priced. Titanium generally does not cause any allergic reactions. However, in rare cases, it may cause hypersensitivity and result in implant failure.

Zirconia

Zirconia is a relatively recent dental implant material. Full abutment uses of the zirconia implant began in the early 1990’s.

Although zirconia implants are a relatively recent invention, they are soaring in popularity. Zirconia has the ability to bond with the jawbone as well as titanium. It does not result in any allergies and is not prone to corrosion.

Zirconia implants match the color of your natural teeth, so there is no risk of a dark outline being visible beneath your gums due to gum or bone recession.

These implants consist of a single piece that incorporates both the post and the abutment, barely leaving any room for error. However, healing can prove to be complicated as a zirconia implant cannot be fully buried under the gum tissue and slight movement can hamper osseointegration, which is the process of the implant fusing with the jawbone.
