Cutting out Acid Can Help Improve Your Oral Health

Man holding his mouth due to pain from too many acidic drinks in need of a visit to McDonald DDS in Plano, TXIf you only believed that sweet tasting foods and beverages are the only ones harmful for your health, you might be in for a surprise. Among the many dietary factors, sugar is not the only one that can reign havoc on your smile.

Foods and drinks that contain high acidic concentrations can cause tooth erosion. This is the process where the enamel of the teeth is “eaten away” (worn out) by the acids present in the mouth. This process can greatly alter the appearance of your teeth and leave more room for other infections to follow.

Tooth Erosion and My Teeth

Many drinks fall under the acidic category: iced tea, soda, and wine, among others. The acids present in these drinks destroy the teeth by dissolving the phosphates and calcium present- these two minerals are responsible for the strengthening of the teeth.

This action can result in the erosion of the enamel, creating an environment that encourages tooth sensitivity and decay. When you consume acidic drinks, it is advisable to brush your teeth 30 minutes after the fuzzy feeling is over. The saliva present in the mouth has enzymes that will be used to repair the damage.

If your enamel begins to wear off, you may feel pain or sensitivity or notice teeth discoloration. In extreme cases, you might develop an abscess and experience tooth loss.

Foods and Drinks to Watch Out For

If you are the stubborn type that still wants to take carbonated, sour or citrus flavored drinks, it would be best to limit yourself. Acidic foods like tomatoes may be nutritious, but they can affect your enamel. Dried fruits are sticky and lodge themselves in between teeth, causing the acidic reaction to take place even hours after the meal is complete. However, soft drinks still take the lead when it comes to notoriety.

Teeth Protection Tips

After consuming acidic foods and beverages, you should wait for at least an hour before brushing your teeth. Your saliva will naturally help wash away the acid and restore the conditions of the enamel. Avoid or limit acidic foods and beverages. After consuming acidic foods, it is advisable to rinse off with water immediately. Moreover, consult with us about dental health products that prevent enamel erosion.
